ISPD is re-examining the disappearance of Elizabeth "Beth" Miller, who was reported missing in Idaho Springs on August 16, 1983. ISPD has been working closely with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to review all the materials related to the case.
March 8, 2026, an Idaho Springs Police officer responded to the Post Office for a reported property damage motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, it was determined that a vehicle had collided with the building, causing significant damage. The adult female driver was issued a citation for careless driving. Appropriate agencies were notified, and the building was temporarily closed pending a structural safety inspection.
March 13, 2026, an Idaho Springs Police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle displaying no license plates. Upon contact, the driver was identified and found to have three active warrants, including one felony warrant. The adult male was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Clear Creek County Jail.
March 16, 2026, an Idaho Springs Police officer conducted a traffic stop on I-70 near mile marker 238.5 for a vehicle traveling above the posted speed limit. During the stop, the driver was found to be traveling with two children under the age of 10 who were not properly restrained. The rear seats of the vehicle had been folded down, and the children, along with an adult passenger, were lying horizontally across the rear cargo area. Road conditions were icy, and temperatures were below freezing at the time. The occupants indicated they were unaware that their actions were unsafe or in violation of the law. Based on the circumstances, both parents were issued summonses for child abuse (must appear), and the driver was additionally cited for speeding.
March 26, 2026, an ISPD officer conducting routine patrol observed a vehicle failing to stop at a stop sign in the 1300 block of Miner Street. A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver was issued a municipal summons for the violation. The driver became upset about receiving the citation and expressed frustration. After the stop concluded, the driver entered westbound I-70 at a high rate of speed, disregarding the safety of other motorists. The officer attempted to catch up and estimated the vehicle’s speed between 90-100 mph. The officer caught up to the vehicle between mile markers 238 and 236, where radar confirmed the vehicle was traveling over 90 mph. A second stop was initiated. Due to the overpowering scent of air freshener inside the vehicle, the driver was asked to exit. Once outside, the officer observed that the driver was unsteady on his feet and detected a strong odor of alcohol (once away from the car). The driver refused to participate in voluntary roadside maneuvers and declined a portable breath test to determine his level of intoxication. Due to the driver’s apparent inability to safely operate a motor vehicle, he was transported to a medical facility in the metro area. The driver was issued summonses for Reckless Driving and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and was released into the care of medical staff.
April 1, 2026, an Idaho Springs Police officer was advised by dispatch of a REDDI (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) report regarding a vehicle entering the city limits of Idaho Springs from westbound I-70 near mile marker 241. The officer located the vehicle at a business in the 1300 block of Miner Street and observed it leave the parking lot and travel eastbound on I-70. While following the vehicle, the officer observed it failing to maintain its lane of travel and speeding through an active construction zone. A traffic stop was initiated. During the stop, the driver failed to provide proof of insurance and admitted to consuming alcohol. The driver agreed to participate in voluntary roadside maneuvers but did not perform them in a manner consistent with a sober individual. The driver was transported to a medical facility for a blood draw. Following the initial blood draw, the suspect grabbed the vials of blood and smashed them on the ground in the direction of the medical staff. The suspect was charged with Second Degree Assault, DUI, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Open Alcohol Container, Open Marijuana Container, and multiple traffic infractions.
April 4, 2026, around 6:00 PM, ISPD, working with Clear Creek Fire Authority and Clear Creek EMS, responded to a structure fire at the Bighorn Apartments. The fire started in a residence on the third floor. The cause is still under investigation, but at this time, it does not appear to have been intentionally set. All residents were safely evacuated, and there were no injuries. One couple has been displaced due to the incident. The American Red Cross is helping the affected residents. We appreciate the quick response of all emergency personnel involved.
During the response to the April 4 structure fire at the Bighorn Apartments, emergency personnel encountered an additional incident involving a resident. While officers, deputies, firefighters, and EMS crews were actively evacuating residents, an individual became frustrated by concerns about potential property damage and attempted to assist by handling equipment on a fire apparatus. When directed to step back and allow crews to operate safely, the individual refused and became physically confrontational with some of the personnel on scene.
The individual was found to have an outstanding municipal warrant out of Idaho Springs for failure to appear. He was taken into custody on the warrant and issued a citation for obstruction of government operations.
Incidents such as this create unnecessary risks for both emergency responders and the public. We remind community members to follow all lawful directions during emergency situations to ensure the safety of everyone involved and not delay/hinder trained emergency services from performing their duties.
April 18, 2026, at about 7:00 AM, ISPD officers responded to a crash on eastbound I-70 near mile marker 240 involving a passenger bus of musicians and a truck. The incident led to the temporary closure of the right lane and the eastbound on-ramp. Luckily, no injuries were reported; neither the bus passengers nor the four people in the truck were hurt. Sun glare and driving too fast for conditions appear to be the main causes. No citations were issued, and both vehicles were towed.
April 18, 2026, ISPD officers took a report from a local female regarding ongoing harassment from a former boyfriend. The suspect had sent messages containing threats of violence toward the victim and her place of employment. Due to the nature of the threats, officers determined there was a credible and imminent risk and obtained an emergency arrest warrant. With assistance from partnering law enforcement agencies, the suspect was located and arrested in a neighboring jurisdiction. The suspect was charged with menacing, harassment, and domestic violence.
April 21, 2026, an ISPD officer on patrol in the historic district observed a known male subject driving past him. The officer recognized the individual as a habitual traffic offender with revoked driving privileges and initiated a traffic stop. A records check through dispatch confirmed the subject’s status as revoked–habitual traffic offender. The driver was also unable to provide proof of insurance. He was cited for driving while revoked and failure to provide proof of insurance.
April 29, 2026, ISPD officers and the CCFA responded to an Idaho Springs residence near 3rd Ave. and Miner St. in which the owner found potential, military-grade rocket rounds inside an old safe. The items were examined and were not deemed to be ‘live’ or dangerous. The items were 106 mm Recoiling Rocket shell casings that were apparently collected by the prior owner of the residence.
May 01, 2026, Traffic stop leads to arrest for weapons and explosive device possession (see press release)
May 04, 2026, An ISPD officer responded to a disturbance in the 2400 block of Colorado Blvd. between a father and son at the location. The son (who was the suspect) left the residence on foot before the officer arrived, but information relayed from dispatch was that the suspect had a nationwide warrant for his arrest out of Florida for terroristic threats. The officer located the suspect in the 2000 block of Miner St. The suspect brandished a knife and yelled at the officer. Moments later, the suspect held the knife to his own throat with the officer keeping a safe distance. Additional units responded, including the CCSO. The officer, without any backup, successfully de-escalated the tense situation and was able to take the suspect into custody without using any force or causing any injuries. The suspect was arrested on the outstanding warrant and transported to the Clear Creek County detention facility.
